Anonymous. John “Jack” Barrymore. c. 1902. New York City, New York.
Twenty-one-year-old Barrymore was a struggling illustrator at The New York Evening Journal. Evelyn and Barrymore met at a party given by White in Madison Square Garden. He was smitten, having seen “Evie” over twenty times in Wild Rose. When the young lovers turned serious, Mrs. Nesbit, who felt Barrymore was too poor, and White, who was jealous, shipped Evelyn off to a school for girls. Barrymore pined and left notes around the school but Evelyn did not, or couldnot, respond. Shortly after, Barrymore began his professional career as an actor.
