10: Tired Butterfly

Mrs. Nesbit left Evelyn in the care of White and went on a trip to Pennsylvania. White promised “his pet” he would have her portrait taken by the city’s best photographers, including Rudolph Eickemeyer. Eickemeyer and White provided direction and costuming, posing Evelyn as Little Red Riding Hood, a Turkish maiden, in a blonde Gainsborough wig, with a crown of yellow chrysanthemums, and on a bearskin rug. Hours later, exhausted, she fell asleep. Eickemeyer struck by her vulnerable figure in the lush black kimono snapped his most famous photo.
