National Art Views, Co., Café Martin: Fifth Avenue Restaurant(c. 1905), 1 postcard: photograph, 14 x 9 cm.

Along with Rector’s and Sherry’s, this was one of the most popular restaurants at the turn of the century due to its cosmopolitan atmosphere. After convincing Evelyn to go on a European holiday, Thaw traveled with her to New York in late June 1906. On the evening of the 25th, the couple met two friends, Truxton Beale and Tommy McCaleb. Arriving later, Evelyn realized Harry was drunk, and perhaps high on a speedball. Evelyn saw White with his son but ignored him, only revealing she’d seen them after they had left.
